WHAT TO DO WHEN MY CHILD HAS DIARRHEA

When your child has symptoms of diarrhea, it poses a serious concern to you.

Here are some little tips that can help you in such situations;

Treatment of diarrhea depends on your child’s symptoms, age and general health. It depends also on how grave the condition is.

Dehydration is usually the major concern with diarrhea. In most cases, treatment includes replacing the lost fluids using Oral rehydration salt (ORS). Antibiotics may be prescribed by your doctor when bacterial infections are the cause. Probiotics and Zinc maybe included.

For breastfeeding children, you can continue with the breast-milk or the baby formula. Make sure the child continues to eat a nutritious, well-balanced diet.

NB: Always consult your doctor or pharmacist before administering any drug to your child

Here are some other tips that can help prevent diarrhea in your child:

Use of safe drinking water

Use of improved sanitation

Hand washing with soap

Vaccination of children against rotavirus

Avoid eating food from street vendors

Ensure that all foods your child eat are thoroughly cooked and served steaming hot

Never allow your child to eat raw or undercooked meat or seafood
