WHAT TO DO WHEN YOUR CHILD DEVELOPS A COUGH

During the rainy season, it is very common for children to develop a cough because of their environment and persons they are in contact with; it can be worrisome and of a great concern to everyone involved. As a parent/ health practitioner, what do you do when your child or a patient develops a cough?

Here are some tips that can provide soothing  relief to the child:

  • Make sure the child has enough to drink as dehydration may develop if a child has a fever and does not drink much.
  • Resting probably helps the body to fight off the viruses more quickly.
  • Elevate the child’s head when sleeping. Babies under one and half years old should not sleep with any pillows.
  • Moist air can help the child cope; try a warm, steamy bath or cool morning air.
  • Paracetamol/Ibuprofen can ease pains and fever. Use of saline drops for blocked nose and vapour rubs applied to the chest and back.
  • Steam inhalation can also help to relieve congestion and coughing.

Note that cough and cold medicines should not be used in children aged 6years and below

  • Therefore, a warm drink made with honey and lemon juice can be used as an alternative to the cough medicine but do not note that honey should not be given to babies under 1year old for risk of botulism.

Ensure you consult your doctor or pharmacist before taking any medication!!!

Washing hands is always the best defense. Encourage the child to cover his/her mouth when sneezing and to use a tissue too. Keep the child at home and avoid contact with other children to protect others from catching it.
